The waterfront New Jersey city of Highlands is an up-and-coming city in Monmouth County with a great view of Sandy Hook Bay and the Atlantic Ocean. The town is known for being filled with a plethora of unique restaurants, and a short ferry ride to New York.
 
Besides being close to the beach, Highlands offers residents a wide variety of things to do, ranging from dining out to exploring nature and wildlife areas. During the warm, crisp spring and summer months, residents can enjoy fishing, boating, strolling on the Henry Hudson Trail and visiting landmarks such as the Twin Lights.

There are numerous things to do, places to eat and have fun; there is no rush, so enjoy them all! You can spend the day along the beach, out on the ocean in a boat, or walking in a scenic parks, and when you’re done, there are an eclectic variety of restaurants to choose from.
 
Hop on the Seastreak Ferry to New York City. Visit Jenna P Sportfishing and reel in some fish. If you don’t catch any fish—but seafood sounds delicious—visit Bahrs Landing. Another delicious seafood restaurant is One Willow, which lets you eat along their small pier. Want to switch it up? Check out Chilangos, a Mexican restaurant that serves everything from fajitas to margaritas or some of the famous BYOB's like Fresh or Porcini.
 

Things to Do

Along with all of the eateries, you can enjoy plenty of other attractions.
 
Hike or Mountain Bike through Hartshorne Woods Park while enjoying the ocean views, dense trees, and old military bunkers. There are paths for multiple skill levels at this park, and dogs are welcomed as long as they’re leashed.
 
Another outdoor activity is visiting the Mount Mitchill Scenic Overlook. The overlook provides travelers and residents a clear view of Manhattan and there is a nearby playground for children.
 
Highlands also hosts the annual Clam Festival to start the month of August. This free festival offers fresh seafood, live bands and entertainment, vendors, games, and rides.
